HEAVY TRAFFIC CONTROL. A iiu.'t’ting of representa fives ol local todies in the No. 12 Main Highways District, was In !d at the County Chambers, Oreymoutli. yesterday, with regard to heavy traffic control. Mr J. R.vnd (Grey County) was voted to the chair. The local hollies represented included : "Westland ami Grey Counties, and Hokitika, Ross, Givyniouth, Brunner, Hunanga, and Kuinara Horough Councils, and Cohden Town Hoard. Apology was made on behalf of the Boiler Count.) Council.
The Chairman referred to the deaths of Mr •!. R. Mu!lan (Roller Count) Clerk), and Mr A. Sloss (Traffic Inspector) and on his motion, seconded by Air Evans, a motion ol sympathy with the relatives of |he deceased, was passed. those present standing in silenc to signify assent,
Report for Past Year,
Air M. Keating, Grey County Clerk, presented the following report : Eor the year ending March 31st, 1932, the Heavy Trallie License fees collected in the No. 12 Highway District amount to the sum ot £3,198/1 </<, as under: —
Several districts show tv reduction from previous years, this being solely due to the slump in the timber industry in which most of the heavy vehicles are engaged. Several owners are in ar rears with their fees and these have been handed to the solicitor for lurther action
Transport Act. The regulations made under the Transport Act are now in force and vehicles engaged in the passenger traffic must first obtain a license to operate from the Transport- Board. The Heavy Traffic fees are in no way altered, and arc still payable to local authorities.
Heavy Vehicle Regulations, 1932. The new and consolidating regulations of 1932, dealing with the use ot heavy motor vehicles have now boon issued and will come into force on the Ist June next. The regulations have been revised and altered in many cases —the principal alteration dealing with weight and speeds of vehicles. The weight limit for four wheel lorries is now limited to 8 tons, whilst multi axled vehicles are limited to 12 tons. Speed limits have also been reduced.
.... Indication Discs. Under tlio lieu - regulations, every vehicle must n nv obtain an indication disc showing tin-* class, viz. A.D. or L. as the case nmv he. under which the vehicle is licensed. The now indication disc must he a'fixed alongside the registered no. plate of the lorry. The plates have been ordered and will he supplied at a cost of 1/6.
Road Classification. It will also he necessary for each local authority to obtain and erect road classification signs to indicate the classification of each road under its jurisdiction. Traffic Inspector. I regret to have to report the death of Mr A. Sloss. who lias filled the position of Traffic Inspector in this District since the inception of the Heavy Traffic Regulations in 1926. The late Mr Sloss had a most difficult task to perform, and he not only succeeded in carrying out his duties with a minimum of friction, hut also in a thoroughly capable and conscientious mamr-r. As one who was closely nssocialc I with the late Inspector, I desire to place on record my appreciation of his valuable services.
Mr A. E. Sloss has been temporarily appointed to carry out the duties of Inspector in the meantime, and in view of tin* fact that he has a good knowledge of the lic.guhttion.s, I would recommend that he l, e given a temporary appointment until such time as the new regulations are in full working order.— Received. The allocation had been as follows: —

Th„ allocation was fixed on the same basis as previously, a point being raised about the Kuinara allocation, as the amount required had not been received It was explained that €77 had been received and £6O paid It was further resolved to vote Kuinara the balance 1 in band of €7 Ids od, and all arrears of last year to come in. Air Turley asked for an increase m the allocation for the Cobden Town Board, but the inquest was refused. Mr A. K. fsloss was appointed Inspom tor For six months, his ditties to include truffle control, and loeal bodies to notify their requirements in regard to control. A vote of thanks was accorded the Chairman, also Mr Keating for bis services, and the Grey County for the use of the room.
