POLICE PROSECUTIONS

DUNEDIN, April 2D.
As an aftermath of the recent unemployed demonstrations ‘a hit baton ichJarg’e by police on . April -11th., charges of inciting lawlessuoiss ‘ were heard against eight men in the Magistjrnte’s Co-urt, while two were charged with encouraging disorder. Sergt. Wade gave evidence that lie warned the leader that 110 would he held responsible for interference- with traffic outside the Town Hall. The crowd sang revolutionary songs anil there wmv general disorder. The crowd -adjourned to the Hospital Boarer where the leader demanded food and money orders. The crowd was unruly, punching -. with, fists- and boring with heads. They' pushed the- police against the wall and the police had no alternative hut to draw their batons, and the crowd dispersed. Only demonstrators were dealt with.
A police witness was butted in the stomach and punched four times; while stones struck the building above them. The rush was sudden, but- the dispersal was just as quick. The demonstrators ran away. One man wais injured. Evidence is to be called for the defence.
