LONDON, April 14

Lady Houston has written to Mr /Neville Chamberlain (Chancellor of the Exchequer) offering a cheque for £200,000 instead of a cheque for £40,000 due. by her as income tax. She proposes that phe extra amount should go towards the cost of adequate army, navy, and air forces, which Lady Houston says she considers require an addition of live millions in the coming budget. Lady Houston adds that if nineteen others do the same, the palftry sum required would ensure that national .safety will be found.

The Chancellor of the Exchequer, Mr Neville Chamberlain has replied to Lady Houston’s offer. He said Parliament alone is in the position to allocate the resources of the .Exchequer for any particular object. Therefore it is impossible to accept such gifts for .expenditure on particular services though he appreciated the spirit prompting the offer. The Navy League has telegraphed to Lady Houston, pointing oh: that one-twentieth of her proffered gift would enable 'the Navy* League to .sway 'public opinion till it realised that England was in deadly peril.
