WELLINGTON, April 16

In the House of Representatives yesterday afternoon the national expenditure Adjustment Bill was read a second' time bv 46 to 25 votes. Replying to the debate on the second reading, the Hon. G. Forbes said that he envied the position of those who were able to discuss the Bill in freedom iirom responsibility, but he had to point out that unless the utmost economy and prudence were exercised, it would not lie possible to make pension and civil service salary payments at all. This would be one of the effects of the crash in the national finances.

THE LEGISLATIVE COUNCIL

The Legislative Council resumed at 5.5 p.m. On behalf of the Managers, on the Industrial Conciliation and Arbitration Amendment Bill, Sir James Parr reported that a.n agreement had been reached with the managers. He explained that it had been made clearer that in the case of women workers, applications foi fixing the minimum wage should be made by unions of workers, instead of by individual women workers. The Council had also sought t.o make the provisions regarding piecework clearer but had yielded to the objections jraised b^rtlrgJHlouse. 'file report was agreed to and the Council rose at 5.30 p.m, until Tuesday.
