ON MANCHURIAN INTERESTS

SHANGHAI, April 8
Further strengthening, the belief that it is Japan’s intention to assume control of the Chine,se Eastern Railway, there comes a report from Harbin which announces the intention of Manclnikuo (the new name of Manchuria) to rename the railway the North Manchurian Railway. Thi s announcement, following closely upon Japanese activities along the Chinese Eastern Railway, is believed to indicate the Japanese determination to control all the railways in Manchuria, arnJ linking up with the South Manchurian Railway. The Soviet Government, which is a joint operator in the Chinese Eastern Railway, lias made no statement regarding Japan’s latest move. In tin* meantime severe fighting is reported in the Uliieiitao neighbourhood, between Japanese expeditionary forces and Chinese*, resulting in heavy casualties among the Chinese.
