DE GROOT FINED
THE SUM OF £5 ft COMMENT BY MAGISTRATE, (Australian Press Association.) SYDNEY. April 6. Captain De Groot was convicted and was fined five pounds on the charge of offensive behaviour at- the opening of the Sydney Bridge. The (Stipendiary Magistrate, Mr Laidlaw, said .that the defendant’s action clearly 'had the approval of the .New Guard movement. The whole incident, said His Worship, had been pre-arranged, and it was designed deliberately to interfere with -the public ceremony conducted by the Government of the State. The offence was aggravated by the fact -that it was intended to belittle the Premier of the State in the presence of the King’s Representatives, for whom an utter disrespect had been shown. No person, or no organisation, said His Worship, had any right to interfere or to interrupt proceedings of tins nature, as to do so might lead to other disturbances, to breaches of the peace, and possibly to a riot. The maximum fine of live pounds would , be imposed,
