The Labour organisations are carrying on their propaganda efforts against the Government with quite spectacular effects, hut it is doubtful if all the showers of words really cloud the issue to the general public. Air Forties, when meeting a deputation on Tuesday when the usual flow of talk came from the speakers, spoke plainly and made it clear that he understood the tactics which were being pursued. Also lie made his position clear as head of the Government, and that he was actinrr on the mandate from the people. There was an amusing interjection by a representative of the Civil Service at the deputation, the speaker remarking it was a question how far the Government can test the loyalty of the public servants 1 Apparently a hint was given to handle the Civil Service with care. Mr Forbes appears to have ignored the remark, but it should be clear that the Civil Service should not presume too far, There are times when economies must be made, and agitation from the source referred to might lead to a number of dismissals, for the country must have n loyal service. To .strike a note of
disloyalty savours to much of extreme action, and the public of New Zea- , laud will not 'stand for that. The Government we are jntrsuaded has the authority of the electors of New Zealand to piut through its policy in ’£he best of the- people. I There will he many who will fee] the ! pinch of it. hut it must he realised that, these are not easy going times, , and the position of the country has to he faced. As was remarked earlier in the week, it was encouraging to i see that New Zealand was able to go on the money market again. This suggests that the policy of the Governernment is approved by those best able , to judge as to its bona fide& and to the 1 ultimate effect of restoring the financial balance. As to the general finances the Minister is to make his statement to-night, and that should convey further information as to the correctness of the policy of economy enforced.
