BIG SALES IN FRANCE

DUNEDIN, March 20.

Last year 10,000 cases of New Zealand apples were sold in France, and is was hoped that an extension of that market could be affected . this year. “In view of that cheering outlook,” said Mr,H. Turner, in, an interview in Dunedin, “it was. for the 'time being a severe disappointment,, baulking high expectations, to learn by cablegram that France had placed an embargo on the entry of New Zealand apples through fear of the San Jose scale, and it is;good to be apprised now that the embargo is modified. No particulars are yet to hand as to the embargo nor its modifications, but any relief from its influence, is welcome. Our New Zealand fruitgrowers will also be pleased with the cable news that Germany’s super-tax oil apples has been modified.. We were informed- in the first' place that New Zealand apples would be exempted from that tax, and now there is an indication that Australian apples will also be exempt, Such an exemption will have for us more than sentimental significance. If Germany’s super-tax was heavy enough to keep out Australian apples the Australian growers could flood the British market to the direct disadvantage of our Dominion. Particulars are awaited, but in the meantime the prospect on the Continent is clearing.”
