Two private homes, those of Mr and Mrs E. Middleton, 61 Halton streeet, Papanui, and Mr and Mrs G. Kellar, in Oxford terrace, Christchurch, were broken into on Saturday evening. From the Halton street house clothing and linen, valued at about £6O, was removed while Mr and Mrs Middleton were -away. They returned at 11 p.m. and discovered that a number of frocks and the contents of the linen press ..had been stolen. Mr and Mrs Kellar were more fortunate, in that nothing of value had been found by the thief; but their experience was unenviable,, for Mrs Kellar woke in the early hours of Sunday morning to see a man standing at the door of her room. When the thief passed to another room and switched on the light Mrs Kellar awakened her husband, who gave chase. The man had left t}ie front door open, however, and made good his escape. • The ..police were notified and the neighbourhood searched,‘but without success.
