A SOBER PORT
. CLAIM FOR PORT CHALMERS. (By Telegraph —Fer Frets Association) V . DUNEDiN, March 7. The most sober port in New. Zealand /is. .a claim': made on behalf of. Phi b Chalmers. Statistics compiled of shipping returns and Court prosecutions leveal that only lour charges of insobriety were laid at Port Chalmers during the 12 months ended on Monday last. Dur’inglithe year 94 ships visited the port. The loivest month was November (3), and the highest April and May (12 each) Thirty-three vessels were docked for such purposes as painting, repairs, overhaul, survey or alterations. Cargo shipped from Port Chalmers included 80,000 bales of wool and nearly threequarters of a million carcases of frozen mutton.
Incidentally these figures have a hearing on the claim that Port Chalmers is the soberest seaport in New Zealand. During’ the period under review Police Court statistics show that- convictions for drunkenness at Port Chalmers totalled four. That modest -total is more notable when it is remembered that it takes six licensed hotels to cater for the requirements of residents .and the floating population of thd port.
