MAORI COLLEGE DESTROYED
HISTORIC BUILDING BURNED. (By Telegraph—Per Pres- Association ) CARTERTON, March 4. Fire at 2 p.m. to-day destroyed the Hikurangi Maori College at Clareville. The Principal’s attention was drawn to smoke issuing fl'om a cupboard near the kitchen chimney, A hand extinguisher was used immediately, but the fire had too strong a held. The furniture was taken out, hut was afterwords destroyed by fames driven by a strong breeze. Two pianos and the school desks were the only sr.lvage \ The building is an historic one. and was built by Sir Henry Tailored over 50 years ago. It contained sixteen rooms. Tlie buildings and contents were covered by insurance, but the amount is unavailable at present.
