IMPORTANT PROPOSALS. TO MEET NATIONAL DISASTERS WELLINGTON, March 1. An important proposal regarding the instant provision for relief, in the event of national disaster, such as serious earthquakes, was made at the meeting of the New Zealand Red Cross Society.

Mon. Dr \Y. E. Collins, M.L.C., President of the Society, outlined the best organisation to carry out relief work to collect funds.

Mayors of all cities and boroughs are to he ex-officio members ol the organisation. Dr Collins stated he had donated LIGOO, which had been placed in Die hands of the Public Trustee, and which would be the nucleus ol ; relief fund.

Dr Collins said that he would propose calling it the New Zen and Red Cross Disaster Relief Fund, to be administered by tlie Executive of the New Zealand Red Cross Society and suggested; (1) That every -Mayor in New Zealand be asked to become an ex-officio member of the Red Cross Disaster Relief'Fund ; (2) that if ho consents, lie name a day each year on which a collection may Ik? made in his district for funds; (3) that lie ask Red Cross headquarters to supply Voluuary Aid Division Servile members to collect moneys on the day, V.A.D.’s to he in Red Cross uniform and to wear badge and to take sealed collecting boxes with them; el) that the Red Cross hear all expenses; (5) that the Mayor or Deputy-Mayor receive (he boxes at the end of the day. count the money, and give receipts: ((>) the Mayor to send money to headquarters and get a receipt. Up till now the Mayor would have no expense. (7) Being an ex-officio member of the fund lie would have, when he was in Wellington, to satisfy him.self that all money js aecoinied for. Dr Collins expressed the hope that it would he a long, long time before another great disaster occurs in New Zealand, but when the disaster did occur, lie trusted the New Zealand Red Cross 'Disaste- Relief Fund will have increased to such a size as to he able to cope with if.
