HONOLULU UNREST
A BAD ADVERTISEMENT. NEED OF EFFICIENT POLICE. SAN FRANCISCO, February 24. Visitors arriving in Sian Francisco from tours of the Hawaiian Island's, continue to give their views on conditions in and around Honolulu, the scene of several desperate attacks on women, but some of these views vary considerably. -Mr Sydney Davis, a London publisher, said that conditions in Honolulu were “interesting enough, but hardly enough to give Honolulu as much publicity as Chicago received from gangster killings.” Mr Davis added: “Honolulu pounced upon the Massie incident in a manner just a little short of hysterical. Before they realised it, the damage was done. A story which was played up for home consumption was relayed to the outside world. Honolulu is now reaping a terrific reward. The tourist- trade, depended upon so largely a s a source of income, had dwindled a way to nothing. Shops and , hotels arc empty and it will be years before the city lives down its evil reputation. “One of the largest hotels had only a dozen guests registered. If the Islands are left to their own devices the matter will he cleaned up to the satisfaction of everybody.’ James Dole, the Honolulu “pineapple king,” arriving in San Francisco, said: “The Honolulu police department has become demoralised, Too much politics and mixed blood are some of the reasons for the laxity on the part of the police force. Steps are notv being taken to straighten out the matter and we believe that an appointive police commission and chief of police will go a long way toward solving the problem.”
