Swimming—The following are the handicaps for the 7b yards in connection with the local Swimming Club’s weekly races this afternoon at Goat Island: M. Houston ser, Gooch 6ser, Lampe 9sec, Ross lOsee, Woolhouse 13sec, Keeeh l.ssec. Wild lvsee, P. Daly 17sec, Dowell 20.secq and Scott--2b sec. Methodist Conference—The 31th annual Methodist Conference opens in Christchurch next Wednesday, when 1 the Revs. D. MeNieol (Greymouth), Voalie (Recftou). and Scott (Westport) will be the ministerial representatives from the Coast. Messrs W. Kemp (Reefton), 1). R. Davies (Westport), and F. Hally (Hokitika), are the lay representatives. Social—-A complimentary conversazione was tendered to Mr T. E. Y. Seddon at the Drill Shed last evening when the Hon. James Holmes, M.L. C., presided over a very large attendance. The chairman referred at length to the services their guest had contributed to the district. Mr Seddon was the recepient of an illuminated address, and met with a splend d reccptidn when lie rose to reply. Other speeches were made by the Hot! Mr McGowan, Messrs W. Bryne and T. W. Bruce. During the evening items wore contributed by Mrs Longton, Misses P. Dowell, L, Hynnig, L. Malfroy, Messrs W. B. Cadzow. Chas Reeves, and the Hokitika Dramatic Club orchestral 1 ” Prospecting—Mr J. J. Mclntosh is organising a party of local residents to visit the Wilberforce next week to see for themselves what the prospects of the reefs are. It is probable that the County Chairman will be one of the party.
Tennis—The Hokitika and Grey Ter.nis Clubs will again try conclusions to-morrow on the local courts. The Hokitika players will be Mesdames Wilson and Renton, Misses Malfroy and Michel, Messrs Wake, Wilson, Newman, Stevenson, Malfroy, and Beare. Nautical. Command—lt is understood that Captain Vendor, of the s.s. Jane Douglas has resigned his command an dtlmt Captain Irvine, who has .been in the employ of the Westport Harbour Board has been appointed to succeed him... Captain Vendor’s departure from Hokitika will be regretted.
Government Buildings—Mr H. J. Plow, under secretary for Public Warks, who has just been on a visit to Hokitika, will, it is stated definitely report on the site for the new public building in Hokitika in a short time.
Telephone Communication—The telephone extension to the Waitalm, Settlement, and South Westland, has seen sanctioned by the department, provided‘that the settlers supply th§ poles in accordance with the application.
Cricket.—The secetary of the West Coast Cricket Association has advised the local Club that the proposed North and South Westland match has been abandoned owing to the lack of interest displayed by the Clubs. This seems strange, as three of the four clubs south of Arahura have sent in the names of players willing to take part in the match.
