FEELS THE SLUMP, (Australian Press Association SYDNEY, Feb. 22. Air A. J. Bennett, Administrator of Norlolk Island in his annual report says ; Norfolk Island has felt the effects of the depress r.n in the loss of its tourist traffic from Australia and New Zealand, and An the loss in its trade in bananas "'i'b Australia, where locally-grown bananas are severely competing against [ it. However, there lias been increased trade with New Zealand, to which 11,812 cases of ban as were exported last year as an offset to the loss with Australia. The Administrator looks forward to an increased tourist traffic with New Zealand as the result of the steamer Morfiida replacing the iMakambo, and also to the development of the vegetable and fruit trade with the Dominion by reason of the establishment of the regular shipping service. The population of the 'lsland is now 992, consisting of 545 males and 447 females. The deaths have occurred during the year of three of the original Pitcairn. Islanders, namely, Henry Buffet, aged'. 85, Edith Adams aged 78, and Emily Young aged 76, while only five survived to celebrate June Bth, 1931, which was tne seventy-fifth anniversary of their landing at Norfolk Island, namely, Ann Quintill aged 93, Cornelius Quintill aged 90, Rachel Taylor aged 82, George Christian aged 78 and Marianne* Buffet aged 75. The \value of the imports from Australia last year wa s £43,380, and e,f those from New Zealand £11,988.
