BAND CONTEST
QUICKSTEP RESULTS
ST. KILDA AND NELSON WIN

WELLINGTON, Feb. 21
Despite' frequent showers of rain and a slippery, sodden ground, the festival' of the New Z ealand Champion Band Contest was opened with the Quickstep Competition at Athletic Park on Saturday afternoon, when 4000 people attended. The competition was divided into two sections, there being ten bands tin the B Grade, and live in the A Grade. St. Kilda Municipal Band (Dunedin) •won the A Grade. Port Nicholson Silver Band was second. The B Grade Quickstep wa s won by the Nelson Garrison Band. Hastings Citizens’ was second, and O'amaru Glul nicipal Band second.
The B Grade contest was held first. The three placed bands were the outstanding ones. Carterton Municipal Band was the best of the others. There was splendid marching in the A Grade. All the bands marched well, although Woolston Band was rather disappointing. 'St. F-lda 'Band’s performance was ja very fine effort. Jhe bands were better trained than in previous contests, with more care over the details. •Results:— DISPLAY AND QUICK STEP. A GRADE.

Masterton Municipal Band ; Music 63 pts, military 1570pts; total 2200pts. Royal Naval Volunteer Reserve Band : music 67pts, military 144!pts ; total 211 A pts. Miramar Silver Band: Miusic 60 pts, military 1483pts ; total 2093p.t5. ‘ Dunedin City Tramways Band; music 65pts, military 139pts; total 204. Christchurch Municipal Band : Music 65pts( military 1383; total 2023.
HYMN CONTEST
WOOLSTON WINNERS
‘WELLINGTON, Feb. 21
At Wellington Town Hall last evening in connection with the Band Contest, fourteen bands competed i:n the Hymn Contest for the McLeod Cup. Woolston Band won with an excellent performance. Another good example of hymn playing was given by St. Kilda Band.
Two good exhibitions were made by B Grade bands, Hastings Citizens, and (Miramar. Results were :

FURTHER RESULTS. WELLINGTON, Feb. 22. The Rand Contest was continued this morning. Results : Boys’ Solo: L. T. G. Hickman (Wanganui) ‘l ; F. Sykes (New Plymouth) 2 ; L. H ‘Abrahams (Nelson) 3. B Flat or BB Bass Solo : T. H. Hughes (Nelson) 1; C. Hansen (Wooiston) and A. (Hughes '(Wooiston) 2nd, equal.
