Twin Foals.—A very unusual occurreiue with regard to tl.e b rth of foals happened at Mr C. Glass’ farm Hokatahj a few day's ago. One of Mr Glass’ draught mares gave birth to twin foals and both are still living. Westland Mining League—A meeting of the Westland Mining League was held hist night. Present: Messrs T. A'. Byrne (County i, Chairman), in the chair, T. \Y. Bruce,. J. F. Byrne, Linnctnann, Weld, H. Jones, Freeberry, J. C. Malfroy, Staines, E. 11. Robinson, Boyes, Cederman, Duff, Ferguson, Mclntosh and H. L. Michel. It was decided that a sub committee he appointed to draw up a request to the Minister of Alines that a £ for £ subsidy be granted to ensure the earliest development of the Ross deep levels.
Mining—The following West Coast mining returns have been received: Pactolus No 2 (120) llOoz 16dwt j Callaghan’s Creek (120), 30oz; Blackwater River (100), 330 z Sdvvts; No Town Creek (week), 30oz; New Trafalgar (week), 260 Z lOdwt; Nelson Creek(ll7)j 10 oz, Educational—Ali&s Dilloh, of Tasmania Who has been appointed mis* tress of the cookery classes under the Westland and Grey Education Boards, visjted Hokitika on Friday and was taken through the Technical School by the chairman of the Board, Mr Morton, Inspector and Mr Wade, headmaster. She expressed surprise at the completeness of the appointment. Mr Bruce, recently appointed teacher in agricultural chemistry in the Nelson, Grey and Westland districts was also in Hokitika on Friday. • ,
Okarito—The harbour master at Okarito reports that the bar is still unworkable. This .is becoming a source of annoyance and inconvenience to residents there. Last week the Jane Dauglas made a survey of the bar but returned to Hokitika. Valedictory—Prior to his transfer to Greymouth, Mr J. Ferguson, manager of the Hokitika branch of the Bank of New Zealand, was met by the principal business men and leading citizens at Keller’s Hotel yesterday afternoon. His worship the mayor presided and read an address which was signed by Pollock and Bevan, W. Perry and Co, H. L. • Michel, W. Duncan, H. Macandrew, James Holmes, J. Manctl, T. W. Bruce, J. C. Malfroy, J. R. MeNaughton, R. Ecclesfield, F. Eisfielden, W. E. Williams, W. Winchester, E. B. Alabin, J. J. Clark, W. R. Cook, I. Brown, AV. Keller, 11. Preston, A. AA'. Bock, H. Heinz, AAV Bray. His \Vorship presented Mr Ferguson with & silver hot water kettle and siNef entree dishes.
Grey mouth Mayoralty—tt is reported, says the Grey mouth “Star I ', that Mr Joseph Petrie will be candidate for the mayoralty at the election in April. Messrs Morton, Coates and Kettle are also mentioned as likely candidates. . / ;* Cricket —The Arahura and Hokitika Catholic Schools on Saturday morning played a match on Cass Square, the country team winning by 28 runs, scoring 72 to their opponents 44. Tainui with 20, and Henderson with 13, were the highest scorers for the winners, while Kirwan scored 11 for the losersSouth Westland Mr T. V. Byrne (County Chairman), stated at the meeting of the Council yesterday that, during his recent visit to South Westland, lie found that the whole of the principal rivers required telephones across them for public safety.
