TO RESTORE "CUT.”
APPLICANT BEFORE COURT.
( By Telegraph—Per Press Association)
AUCKLAND, February 19
The Arhitration Court to-day heard the application by Unions, whose members were employed at WaiM Gold Mining Coy., at Waihi, for the i«storation ol* ten per cent, wages cut. The Unions’ grounds are that goldmining is unaffected by depression, but is prosperous, and, whereas one of the principal reasons given for the wage reduction was that costs might he reduced, such benefit now was not possible, as Britain had gone off the gold standard. The Company opposed the application on the principal ground that nobody can forecast how long present prices will con tin ulp. If war debts were cancelled and Britain’s external trade imp/oved, the demand for gold will slacken. Further, the Government had forestalled the Unions by taking tbe whole of the expected benefit, and more besides. Judgment was reserved.
