DOG ON A MOTOR-CAR
CONVICTION UNDER MOTOR REGULATIONS, CHRISTCHURCH, February 17. The practice of carrying dogs on the running hoards of cant is illegal unless the animals are securely fastened, according to a- ruling given yesterday by Mr H. P. Lawry, S.M., in the Magistrate’s Court,
The Heathcote County Council prosecuted David Busch on a charge of carrying a. dog on the running board of a motor-car. Defendant was convicted and discharged, ' The charge was laid under Section 10F of the Motor Regulations which states that no person shall operate a motor-vehicle or trailer, other than a motor-cycle, if the load is not either safely contained in the body of the vehicle or else securely fastened to the vehicle. .
Counsel for the defendant submitted that the regulation was being stretched considerably. If it were intended to prevent people from carrying dogs on cars there would be specific mention in the regulation. Inspector Nupper said that the council was-not pressing for a penalty. The case liacl been brought to obtain a ruling. Counsel said that a conviction in this case would mean that any person carrying dogs o nears, would be liable to prosecution.
The Magistrate said that he thought son carrying dogs on cars would be the meaning of the regulation.
