TIMARU, February 18

Three men, Ivan Valeta, Alfred T. L. Huston and James Sims, appeared! at the Magistrate’s Court thi s afternoon charged with making bets at totalisator odds on the Dunedin races. Joseph Todd was charged with making , bets with the defendants named, There were two charges

against each, Valeta, Huston and l Sims had complained to the police that Todd had been betting with valueless cheques, one having been presented at the hank and been dishonured. Todd had complained to the police that the other men had refused to pay him. A number of substantial bet-s were made, most of which were on horses which

won. Ail four pleaded guilty, and they were fined £2O each on each charge.
