Tlie Westland County Council announce in another column the completion of the mining valuation rolls. All objections .thereto must bo lodged at the Magistrate’s Court office prior to 15th day of February. The rolls are open for inspection during office hours.
Despite the wretched conditions in the business portion of the town last evening there was a large attendance at Jbe Soldiers’ Hall where a dance was held for the visiting tennis players. An enjoyable evening was spent, music being played by the Gaiety Dance Band.

Tlie Croquet Club’s flower show on "Wednesday next at the Soldiers Hall is engaging much attention. Keen interest is being shown in the three classes for the Bubv Show and there promise to be a numerous entry list that will give tlie judges some trouble to find the winners. All entries should be made on Monday evening. Donations of produce, or other articles for disposal will he gladly received.
A good story of the old days on the Nelson railway was told at a social function in Nelson recently. One day a Waimea farmer arrived at the Richmond station with a load of haled hay, but the porter said r.o truck was available. However, the official was conscientious and, asking the farmer to call hack later in the day. lie cycled to the Appleby station, a mile away, and pushed a truck down a gentle grade to Richmond. A fine type of cargo carrier arrived at Dunedin from New York, via Auckland, Welington, and Lytelton. She
is the motor-ship Ardenvohr, which is under charter to the American and Australian Line. The Ardenvohr is a new vessel of 5237 tons gross, and was completed at Glasgow at the beginning of last November. Later in t! e m nth she sailed for Freeport, Texas, to load sulphur, and from Freeport ske proceeded to New York to complete loading. New York was cleared on December 16 and Panama on December 23. Severe winter gales were experienced in the Atlantic, but fine weather prevailed during the remainder of the voyage until the vessel was nearing New Zealand, when westerly gales and rough head seas were encountered for four days.
Some unemployed men have complained that when working in camps they have to pay,most of their wages out for food, but those who have been working in the Se'.wyn County (says the Christchurch Times) have had nothing to grumble about on that score. The county engineer (Mr E. I’mtt) has given them invaluable help and, by buying wisely, the men are fed at a cost of only one sidling per day each. Mutton is bought on the hoof, and there is always one ol the men who can butcher the sheep satisfactorily. The death took place at Westland Hospital tin's morning of Mr Josepn Radonrski, a well known resident for many years. He was a single man, a carpenter and contractor, a native of Poland and 62 years of age. He had been suffering considerably for some time past. Gold amounting to 16,649 ounces and valued at £68,959, was exported from New Zealand during the mouth of December, 1931. The amount for the corresponding month of 1930 was 5518 ounces, valued at £22,709. Last month’s figures, therefore, ihow -an increase invalue of £46,259, or an increase m quantity amounting to 11,131 ounces o\-er the returns for December of the preceding year.
