FURTHER WAGE CUTS

PLAN FOR RESISTANCE.

CHRISTCHURCH, January 26

Preparations are now being made by organisations representing the wage-earners and the unemployed to resist any alterations in present award conditions which may lie contemplated by Parliament and put into effect during tip, forthcoming short .session* Tli.e Unemployed Workers’ Movement has sent a circular to .all trade unions urging them to join with, the unemployed in presenting a united front against any further attacks on wages or unemployment relief, and to take part in a. mass demonstration on February 25.

At the inaugural meeting oil the Thursday evening of the newly-formed Canterbury Industrial Council, which promises to be a new and militant force in the trade union movement, the question of requesting British workers to boycott New Zealand products, in the event of any further wage-cuts being made in the. Dominion, will be discussed. Officers will also he elected at this meeting.

Tile circular which the Unemployed "Workers’ Movement has addressed to the trade unions in Christchurch, and the West Coast states that in the past the unemployed have received little assistance front the trade unions in theii* fight for better conditions, In the coming session, it declares, fresh attacks will be made on the standards of living of both employed and unem* ployed,

“By February 25 tve shall know exactly what the master class intends, how these- attacks, will come,” continues the circular. “On that day join with us in a demonstration against new wage-cuts, worsened conditions, and uemployment. As -. men and women, let us warn, the Government that we will resist any measures for lowering our standard of living. Solidarity, will win. Come in masses and bring your banners; Labour will be reborn when we realise and use our power.”

Preliminary arrangements for this demonstration will be discussed at a meeting to be held in the Trades Hall on February 10.
