CAMPBELL’S TRIAL

EVIDENCE FOR PROSECUTION. CASE IS ADJOURNED. (Australian Press -Association.) SYDNEY, January 22. The hearing was to-day resumed of the case against Colonel' Campbell, •leader of tho New Guard, who is charged with the use of insulting hm,gauge ill a public utterance. To-day neither the Premier, Mr Lang, nor Mr Geode (Head of the Transport Hoard) attended the Court in response to subpoenas requiring their attendance, but Mr Sleeman (Publicity Officer ol tu 'Government) attended. Defective Sergeant Watkins, resuming l;is evidence, said that his report of Campbell's spe'-ch to the Police Chief contained no statement that he personally had been insulted by anything that Campbell had said. The witness admitted he had prepared a report for the Government concerning 'the (New Guard s objects and activities, and that this report was of a most favourable character. Other police evidence was called, which corroborated Detective Sergeant 'Lindruin’s evidence. The evidence for the prosecution closed late this afternoon. Legal argument then followed. Mr Laidlaw, the Magistrate, ruled that the information was not bad, as was claimed by counsel for the defence, inasmuch that it did not allege t-hr-t the words complained of were insulting to any particular person, The hearing was adjourned till Wednesday,
