Over the amount collected during the corresponding week of last year, The total amount collected between the Ist. and the 16th of January was nearly fifty millions in the first seventeen days last year. The collection of surtax to date is equally satisfactory. During the week fending on the 16th of January, there was received £9,350,000 compared with (£2,450,000 during the corresponding week of last year. The total amount of surtax received for- the first sixteen <r,- days of the year was fifteen millions. Bankers continue to receive reports from the continent regarding the favourable impression created by the tax collections and inflow of revenue, which enabled a reduction of £35,245,000 sterling of the floating debt in one week.
