TWENTY-FIVE YEARS ACO.

Grand Oriental Bazaar—Mr H. Burger was the lucky winner of the first prize in the Art Union in connection with the Grand Oriental Bazaar, being a gold nugget valued at £ls.

An infant,tweiitv-lour hours old, won the ninth prize. Other fortunate ticket holders were Messrs J. Beban of Goldsboiougb, R. McMillan, Duckworth, Kumara Junction, M. Blank, Hokitika, P. Murphy, Blackuater, Mrs ’l. Green, Hokitika, Missc*s P. Hodgson, Ross, and V. Landori', Kokatahi.

Appointment—Mr T. H. Gill, who lias been appointed an inspector of secondary schools, was formerly rector of the Hokitika District High School. His many friends well congratulate him on the promotion. Swimming—The annual meeting of the Hokitika Amateur Swimming Club was held last evening, Mr M. Houston presiding. The following officers were elected for the ensuing year:— President, Mr H. L. Michel, vicepresidents, Messrs, E.. B. Mabln, J. Mandl, P. J. Dunne, J. J. Breeze, D. J. Evans, J .J. Mclntosh, Drs. Macandrew and Teichelmann; captain, Mr M. Houston; vice-captain, Mr H. M. Coulson; handienpper, Mr W. A. Dixon ; secretary and treasurer; Mr. Keach; Committee; Messrs Dixon, Cox, Coulson, Lampe, Moore, Will, and Keach jdelegates to centre, Messrs Houston, Mabln and Moore. A hearty vote of thanks was accorded Mr G. H, Hills, retiring secretary. Voting—“ The last member advocates giving a vote to every person over 21 years of age,” said Mr Fost r secretary of the New Zealand Educational Institute. “Well, I am old fashioned enough to think that people should not be allowed to vote on questions which they do not understand, or in whicli they are not particularly interested.” ,

Governor’s Visit.—Arrangements in connection with the Governor’s visit next week have been finalised. On arrival next Friday lie will be presented witli a joint address from both Councils. A visit will be paid /to Lake Kanieri in the afternoon while a Conversazione takes place in the Drill Hull at night. On the following day, the Governor and party wil be driven to Woodstock and llimu in the morning, visiting the Westand Hospital and Maori Pa en route, continuing to Stafford and Goldsborough. It is expected His Excellency will be requested to lay the foundation stone of the new wing at the Hospital. The Governor will also visit Hokitika in March. The Committee in charge of arrangements is as follows: —The Mayor, County Chairman, Messrs T. W. Bruce, D. J., Evans and A. A. Andre wes.

Railway construction—The first gang of twenty-five men on the Midland Railway works at Otira were paid off yesterday, and another twenty-five leave next Thursday. The workmen are indignant at the treatment they they have received in being dismissed at such short notice.

Ross Hospital—Applications are invited by the Ross Hospital Committee for a matron at a salary of £6O, and a probationer at £2O per annum. Mining.—A claim for a reward for the more recent discoveries of quarks reefs at the Wilberforce having been made to the Mines Department, the prospectors liaf'e been informed that the claims for rewards for the discovery of n goldfield at the Wilberforce dating as far back as 1870 and again in 1884, are on record in the Department.
