HOLDERS’ WAITING GAME

SYDNEY, January 14

There was a featureless market today at the Sydney Stock Exchange. It was apparent that share-holders were playing a waiting game. It is believed that a successful outcome to the Lausanne Reparations •Conference will pave the way to brighter business. Australian Consols displayed an easier tendency to-day. The 1938 4 per cent, issue dropped 7.s 6d on the day at £94 7 S 6d ; 1941 bonds lost 10s; those of '1947 6s 3d ; and those of 1944 lost 2s 6d.

Some of the other longer-dated issues declined sharply.

Industrials were steady, but the turnover was below normal. Bank shares overe almost neglected. Gas shares were steady. SYDNEY, January 14. At to-day’s wool -sales 10,391 bales were offered and 10,030 wore sold, also 383 disposed of privately. The market closed under brisk competition from Japanese and Continental buyers with fair support from Yorkshire and the United States. Prices continued firm, with a hardening tendency. The Bank’s gold holdings are unchanged at £10,500,000, or nineteen P«i r ‘t eightyeight per cent. The deposits have increased by £2,577,000 to £54,565,000. The Lonuo,. balances have risen by £1,160,000 to £l2 926,000. The ‘short terms loans are up by £872,000 at £10,774,000. The ra|tio of cash to deposits is twelve point seventy-five per cent.
