YESTERDAY’S BUSINESS. (Australian Press Association.) SYDNEY, January 13. The Sydney Stock Exchange was not nearly so active to-day as it was yesterday, and the halt yesterday in the rising values of Australian consols is still noticeable. The turnover to-day was not- large, showing that the holders are generally content to retain their interests. Four per cent. 1938 bonds changed hands at an advance- of Is 3d at £9o ss; 1941 four per cent, advanced 2s at £94 10s; 1947 four per cents rose 2s 6d at £94 ss. A weaker market prevailed for other issues those of 1951-61 selling a-t £93 15s; and 1950 at £94. Other sales were: Bank of New South Wales £3O 12a 6d; Commercial Bank of Sydney £.17 7s 6d; Booth’s Brewery 27s lid; Toohey’s Brewery 18s 6d; Dunlop Perdriau Rubber 14s 2d; Burns Philip South Sea 31s 3d. There was unusual activity in Broken Hill -stocks owing to the enhanced metal prices. There were sales of Broken Hill Proprietary shares at 665; Broken Hill South at 47s 9d; North Broken Hill at 66-s; Sulphide Corporation at 11s 6d; Zinc Corporation at 31s 3d. BRITAIN’S AIM. TO INCREASE WHEAT SALES. LONDON, January 13. Mr Gilmour said that the basic principle of the wheat quota scheme was to ensure a market for the British wheat of nullable- quality at a guaranteed price.
It is believed that at the outset the quota of British wheat to be milled will be fixed at fifteen per cent., and that it will gradually increase as is justified by circumstances.
