WHISKY AND CIGARETTES. (By Telegraph— -Pcr Pretn Annexation' CHRISTCHURCH, January 12! A bottle of whisky and a few cigarettes stolen from the Masonic Hotel on December 21 led to the appearance of James * Xankwill M’Ewin, a confectioner, aged 32, residing with his parents in Colombo Street, in the 'Magistrate's Court this morning. M’Ewin was charged with the theft of a quantity of liquor and cigarettes valued at £5 Is, the property i/f George Sydney Simpson. He pleaded guilty. Counsel stated that M’Ewm was a well known cricketer, having played for both Canterbury and Now Zealand. He will appear again on January 21, by which time the Piohation Officer will have submitted a r- port. Chief-Detective Carroll said that M'Ewin denied taking goods to toe value of £5 Is.
