BRITISH FIGURES DROP. DECLINE IN SHIPPING. (United Press Association.—By Electric Telegraph.—Copyright.) LONDON, January 12. The Board of Trade returns lor the past month show that imports decreased by £ L 2,630,000, exports £6,381,UK) and re-exports increased bv £292,11 0,1. The principal decreases in imports were grain Hour i11,747.00(1, meat £1 ,-olJ,()00, non dutiable food and drink £1,220,000, + wood and timber £096,000, raw cotton £652,000, oil seeds, etc. £602,000, wool.en and worsted yarns and manufactures £909, 000. The principal decreases in exports were:—Coal £529.000, vehicles £2,102,000. The amount of shipping under construction in the United Kingdom in December was tlie lowest since 1887, according to Lloyds’ Register quarterly report, which gives the figures at 400,505 toils representing a decrease of 16,880 tons, compared with last September, and 508,397 compared with December, 1930. 1,403,795 tons of shipping is under construction throughout the World. Of this 28 and adialf phr cent, is being built in tile United Kingdom. improvement anticipated. LONDON, January 13, The latest trade returns disclose striking evidence of the success of the anti-dumping duties; and it is likely that the result of the antidumping order of the present week, based on an examination of recent imports of textiles, clothing. silkstockings, linoleum and perfumery, which are all showing declines, will be reflected in increased home production when the abnormal stocks accumulated in November are absorbed. INCOME TAX COMING IN WELL. LONDON, January 13. The ratepayers have responded bravely to the demands on them. The receipts for the first nine days of the New Year were £39.553.000, compared with 30,776,000 for the first ten days of 1931.
The increase is practically all due to the income tax payments.
