WOMAN’S GOOD WISHES. BENCH NOT IMPRESSED. “A happy New Year to you, your Worship,” said Mary Sheedy with a winning smile, a® he stepped into the dock to face Mr H. P. Lawry, S.M., on a charge of drunkenness in the Christchurch Police Court. The court was not impressed, and the clerk read over the charge in the voice clerks reserve for reading charges. “I was not drunk,” said Mary Sheedy in answer to the charge. “I had had three or four drinks. It was New Year’s time, and certainly I had a spot.” A constable detailed 'the arrest. “Slhe was then drunk,” he concluded in the stereotyped formula. “Oh, it’s a wonder your lies don’t choke -you!’ exclaimed Mary Sheedy, thoroughly roused. “It won’t do you any good to send me to gaol,” she said, addressing the magistrate. “No, it won’t do me any good,” said the magistrate, “but you’ll have to go there for three months.” “I hope to goodness you drop dead,” said Mary Sheedy as she stepped from the dock, all her New Y r ear spirit of. good fellowship departed-
