MRS GANDHI GAOLED. INDIA GENERALLY QUIET. (British Official Wireless.) RUGBY, January 12. The news reached London 'this •morning that, following on her support of the resumption of the “No 'Pax" Campaign in Bardoli, Mrs Gandhi has been arrested. News from India indicates that tile situation remains generally calm, and without any notable incident. A Peshawar message states that itjhree days of continuous rain, has discouraged and dispirited the picketed. The hostile Lashkar of Hie I‘akir of Alimgar has dispersed, they having received no encouragement from loyal Mcihmed Maliks, while the conduct of the people in Khatak is now reported to be excellent. Sir Frederick Svkcs, Governor of Bombay, addressing a conference of leading Indian and European business men, to-day, emphasised that the Government of India did not intend to follow the example of the Indian Congress and endeavoured by eo-reivo measures to compel trade to 101/ow ill any particular channel. He said the Ordinances to India were designed to protect trade from being liainpt red. The Government insisted on freedom to trade how and where they liked, and would extend the fullest prelection against molestation. The Governor of Bombay also declared -that the Indian Government adhered to the terms of Mr MacDonald’s statement at tho close of the Bound Table Con fereuee, and askeU |,,r the co-operation of tlw sole r elements in the community with the Government, which was striving to prevent a bad legacy being kit lor Hie future.
