AGAIN POSTPONED.
UNSUITABILITY OF CONDITIONS

AUCKLAND, January 13
Once again Smith found it impossible to try for the ten mile recon.!, as announced yesterday, and at a meeting of officials last night he decided ,to postpone his attempts on the speed records until January 22nd. Then the spring tides will return and, it is hoped, the beach will he right for an attack on the five and fen mile. Times for the mile run will he left until February 4th., when the “King” tide, the biggest tide of the year, is due.
The beach has been dead against Smith since he went into headquarters at Waipapakauri, and he in unwilling to make any attempt with the beach unfavourable.- As officials could not stay indefinitely, a decision was reached,' and there was a general exodus from Waipapakauri to-day. The Auckland Automobile Racing Club officials and timing experts left for Auckland while the majority of Smith’s party are going away for a khort time.
It is possible that Smith may go big game fishing. Two mechanics who have been sleeping in the garage, are staying on. Although. Smith is quite satisfied with the ear after the trial run on Monday, he may give her a spin, and keep her oiled. If he finds tile beach favourable between now and January 22nd, he can recall his ■offibijals at”short notice. Tlie post office erected near the garage is closing down this evening, when it will be vacated, except for a man or two to act as caretakers. HARKNESS AT SYDNEY. refusal to clear up mystery SYDNEY,, January 12. Don Darkness. the colleague of “Wozard” Smith, arrived in Sydney to-day. He declined to clear up the mystery as to why he has returned from New Zealand. Barkness said that he had come back to do certain work, and that he would return to the Dominion shortly.
