ART UNION

QUESTION OF POLICY

MATTER FOR DECISION BY CABINET.

CHRISTCHURCH, January 7

Interviewed at 'the Christchurch railway station on his way to Wellington last evening, the Minister of Internal Affairs, the Hon. A. Hamilton, said that the matter of granting further permits for art unions had not yet been considered by Cabinet. Permits had been issued for about three, months ahead, and the position would no doubt be reviewed before the end of that period. “It is quite possible there Will be some change of policy,” he added; “but I have not discussed the matter with Other members of the Cabinet. The committee of CttbiM which considers the granting of permits has not been re-appointed, but that matter will be attended to in the near future. Four Cabinet Ministers attended to permits under the United Government, and the new committee is likely to consist of two members of the Reform Party and two of the United Party.” The 'Minister was not in a position to indicate when the New Zealand Swimming Association’s application to conduct an art union would be dealt with. Mr Hamilton was unable to say if there would be an early session of Parliament. Even the Prime Ministei ytlic Right Hon. G. W. Forbes) has no idea when Parliament would be called together, he said. In reply to further questions, Hamilton’said that Cabinet had not yet gone into the matter of taking further action in the direction of reducing interest rates on mortgages. There hud, however, been a very hugnumber of applications lor relief undei the recenti’y enacted Mortgagors’ Relief Act, and adjustments were being made between mortgagors and mortgagees.
