At a number of pitheads armed pickets tried to drive back the miners who were attempting to resume work. Considerable looting of shops took place which the police, in armoured cars, stopped. ‘The Communists, however, reckoned without five mil.mns of unemployed in Germany who, as reserve labour,. are capable of breaking tlie best organised strike.
