A Chinese policeman and six Russian civilians were killed in riots at Harbin arising from a Chinese manhandling a Russian. Rumours of ,the mandhandling brought a huge crowd of angry Russians outside a Chinese shoestore, where the beating was supposed to have occurred. The Chinese police, hoping to prevent further mobilising in the Russian community, barricaded tne main street. Ihe rioting increased, and police fired on the rioters. In addition to the dead, twenty Russians were injured, some seriously. The Japanese are accused of instigating the trouble by bribing White Russians. SITUATION L >CHANGED. FOOCHOW, January 5. The situation is unchanged. Three Japanese destroyers, carrying additional marines, have arrived. The Japaii.se at a mass meeting, demanded an official apology.
