COUNTRY DECLINES. OFFICE CUSTOMS PORTFOLIO REFUSED. (Australian Press Association.) MELBOURNE, December 31. Regarded as a surprising development, the United Country Party has declined office in the new Federal Cabinet, now being formed by Mr Lyons. Doctor Earle Page, Leader of the Country Party held conference with Mr Lyons to-day, and indicated that liis party would be satisfied if given the Customs portfolio as the cjountrymen were extremely anxious for a tariff revision.
Mr Lyons replied lie was unable to agree, whereupon Dr. Page assured him that the Country Party would continue friendly relations with the United Australia Party, but would accept, no Cabinet responsibility. Air Lyons expressed regret at this turn of events, and said lie was most anxious that the Country Party should accept office having regard for the arrangement whereon the election was fought. JOCK GARDEN’S DEFEAT. RESULT MAY BE QUESTIONED. SYDNEY, December 31. The allocation of preferences for the Lang sent, is not yet complete, hilt the United Candidate, Mr .Dein, now leads the Lang Planner, Air Aluleany, by 2758 votes. Mr Dein is expected to secure a majority of the outstanding votes.
It is understood that the Trades HalJ maw question the Cook neat result, where Jock Garden was narrowly beaten. Round about eight thousand votes are believed to have been east by women, who had religious reasons, declined to place'their vote opposite a Coinmimit’s name, and were therefore rejected. As Garden lost by only 713 votes,, it is contended that there should be the closest scrutiny before the poll is declared. FURTHER, ELECTION RESULTS. MELBOURNE, Dec. 31. Air J. E. Fenton, former Minister of Custom's, who, with Lyons, resigned from the Scullin Ministry, has been returned for the Maribynong constituency, after a neck and neck struggle with his rival Labour opponent, Air Beckett, of Navi on, by a majority of 417. Anotlir Labour stalwart, ATr Anstey, who always hitherto bad won by a large majority, retained the Bourke seat by the slenderest margin.
