Among the visitors to Hokitika yesterday was Mr James O’Brien M.P., who returned from tne North 'lsland to Greymouth last week. Mr O’Brien had been north mainly to see Ministers and heads of Departments at Wellington, relative to district matters. Speaking to a representative of this paper yesterday, i.VIr O’Brien indicated’, that he found Government funds very tight at it he Treasury, and efforts to secure additional grants for unemployment had only a meagre response. He was hopeful- however, of something being clone a-Dout exchange 'between New Zealand and Australia, which would assist the timber industry, and be helpful in relieving unemployment on Prom conversations he had with those in authority there was a promise of something being done of a satisfactory character, and he was still working to that end. The position was well understood, and fqr That reason ‘there was good hope of a satisfactory outcome of the problem.

At the fifty-sixth annual sports meeting of the Waimate Caledonian Society, on Boxing Day, H. Turtill, the Greymouth cyclist, secured three thirds. He gained third place in the one mile handicap, from scratch, after running second in his heat. The event was won by I’Anson with Hill second. Turtill also gained third place in the half mile New Zealand Championship. This event was won by Ritchie, Lamberton filling second place.. He was again third in the three mile New Zealand Championship,j which event wos won by A. C. Ritchie who also won two previous events. "VV. J. Lamberton was second in the latter event.
