STARVING HEROES
CH'RISTMA* HfIMPPR FOR FIRST WAR CROOK. (United Press Association.—By Electric Telegraph Copyright.) LONDON, December 25. An ex-officer announced that he would present a' Christmas hamper to the first war crook. He invited applications from men Wounded earlier than 'August 27, 1914; -and received 100 letters from Mons veterans. Many o them were still disabled. The hamper goes to' Stoker J. Dale, of Gillingham, who waS wounded aboard H.M.S Lark, when she attempted, to rescue the survivors >f H.M.S. Amphion, which struck a mine. ‘ Many of the letters were most pathetic and described the heroes’ earliest war days. They are now fighting unemployment and poverty. One concluded: “The larder is gmptv and the grate ditto, hut the spirit lives.”
