WAIKATO MINERS
THREE HUNDRED TO GO, RATIONING OF WORK REFUSED, [By Telegraph, Per Press Association.) AUCKLAND, December 23. , A decision that the notices of dismissal recently served on about. 300 coax miners in , the Huntly district could not be rescinded was made by the mine-owners to-day at a conference with the representatives of the men. The question of rationing the work, as a way out of the difficulty, was discussed. The employers took the view that they had already been rationing work, and that it was impossible to * carry on on those lines. It was stated that the schemes of rationing that were attempted An the South Island had' been abandoned* as they had raised the cost 'of production to' a level at which it did not pay. Cases of- extreme hardship were quoted by the men, who referred to the instances in which miners with large. families had found themselves without work.
The employers thereupon offered to appoint a Committee to investigate any cases of extreme hardship.
