N.S.W. FINANCES

AUDITOR CENERAL’S OBSERVATIONS.

(Australian Press Association.) SYDNEY, December 22. The New 'South Wales State Audi-tor-General reports that the Departmental expenditure during the financial year ended June 30th totalled £20,318,000. . whereof only £2,530,000 was provided from the departmental earnings, leaving the balance of £17,750,000 to he found by general revenue. There was five millions spent on .duration, which was the costliest item.

'l’he Auditor-General’s report draws attention to the disparity between the cost and the collection of the relief tax, and 'tlie income tax'. The cost in the case of the relief tax was 45s 4d per £IOO, and of the income tax 22s 4d per £IOO. The Auditor-General added :

”It seems reasonable to -expect 1 that charges of this nature against the relief funds . should be kept as 1 low as possible. The income tax collections amounted to £6,183,000, but the Audi-tor-General criticises, the method under which there are too. many assessments subject to amendments, thus raising a doubt as to the general accuracy of the assessment.
