QUARTERLY MEETING. GRKYMOUTH, December 16. Mr D. Shannahan presided over the quarterly meeting of the West Coast branch of the New Zealand Farmers’ Union, there being also present —Messrs T. Q’Neil (Ivokatahi), Hi G. Carter (Kamak-a), W. Fisher (Nelson Creek), |J. -Muleave (Ngahere) and J. J. M’Kay (Harihari). In reply to representations made by the West Coast Union requesting that a drainage expert report on the La Fontaine Swamp, the Minister oi Lands replied that it was considered inadvisable to expend loan moneys by way of clnuiuige a.t the present lime. It whs resolved thsit the Coniinis sioner of Crown Lands be advised that the West Coast Farmers’ Union recommend that the matter of letting ouit for lease the La Fontaine Swamp be gone , 0 n with in the meantime, and that further moneys be spent by way of unemployment labour for productive purposes on the .lines of the report of the recent Commission ; also that the tenure be extended from twenty-one years to sixty-six years; and further the lessees for maintenance of the mam drains. It was resolved that it be an instruction to 'the various branches to set up a small committee to consider applications for labour under the unemployment scheme for development work, such committees to get into touch with the couucihbrs of the biding.
