COWS BLOCK LINE
In Taranaki the cow reigns supreme, and they even put up with many of her eccentricities. She has earned a vide reputation as a train stopper, as she has a nasty habit oi straying at night and the railway line seems to have a fatal attraction for her. The other night a herd wandered on to the line between Whareroa and Hav-e.'a, and tried to negotiate the railway bridge, but several of them got stuck fast between the sleepers. With the aid of ropes, block and tackle, crowbars and nearby farmers, who were roused out of bed, the cows were removed, and the goods train went on its way after Ueing held up for (two hours. /Phis happened at three o’clock in the morning. With the luck of the Taranaki cow, the only casualty was a broken leg for one animal.
