The death took place at the Bullei District Hospital on Monday of Albeit Bottom, a miner aged 62. Deceased who was a native of Stafford, Westland, and. had been ill for some time, was a very old resident of Denniston, where lie was a member of the Volunteer Rifles. He was a single man and is survived by brothers and sisters.

The District Engineer at Greymoutli advises that £I,OOO. on account, has been issued to the Grey County for the construction of the Orangipuku River bridge, on the Kuinara-Inchbonnie road. £750 has also been issued to the County for the erection of the Little Holionu bridge (second crossing) on tlie same road. Aonther authority received by the County is £670 for the erection of a, footbridge over the Ahaura River.
Mr M. D. Hunter of the clerical staff of the Public Works Department, at Greymoutli, who leaves to-day, cn transfer to Dunedin, was on Monday farewelled by the Greymoutli staff, and made the recipient of a pair of hairbrushes. 'Hie presentation was made by the District Public Works Engineer, Mr T, A. Johnston. Messrs Cullen and Shannon also paid a tribute to the good qualities displayed by Mr Hunter.
Sixty-eight men found employment, on the Greymoutli wharf yesterday loading timber into the Union Go’s steamer, Kaimiro, which arrived the day before from Auckland to load timber for Sydney and Melbourne. The vessel is scheduled to load a full cargo, approximately 1.130,000 superficial feet, of white pine. Two other vessels, the Kaimai and the Totara, in port, completed their loading, but considerable seas in the river prevented their departure.

Mr W. Mellett, of Oweka, received aevere injuries to one of his legs, while employed with others splitting timber. A splinter flew off a steel wedge be was using, cutting an artery in the limb. He was rushed into Keeton, where hi* injuries received medical attention.

Yesterday was the eighty-first anniversary of the arrival of the Canterbury' pilgrims. It was on September 7, 1850, that the sailing ships Charlotte Jane, Randolph and Cressy, followed the next day by the Sir George Seymour, cleared from Plymouth with over 700 passengers. All the vessels but the* Cressy arrived at Lyttelton on December 16, the Cressy reaching port on December 27th.

His Honour gave judgment for defendants, with costs according to scale.
Some time during the past ten days an attempt was made to set lire to the Public Library at Wallsend, and had the attempt been successful, nothing would have saved, the building itselx, and the two adjacent hotels, one on each side of the library, as there is only a narrow passage between the buildings, while the dwelling houses of Mr F. Williams and Mrs Creagli would also have been in danger, as well as the Public Hall. A window was broken and a quantity of straw etc. saturated with kerosene and set fire to but it failed to git going.
A meeting of the Unemployment Committee was hold at the Town Hall at 10 a.m. to-day. Present: The Mayor (Mr G. A, Perry) in the chair, Messrs Evans, lieenan, Warren, Harvey and Coles. One goldmining application in the Toarolm district was approved. The Treasurer (Mr Coles) mentioned the shortage of money next week to give full employment to those needing it On the motion of the Mayor, seconded by Mr Heenan, it was resolved to open a , Mayor’s Fund for the relief of unemployment and distress and to invite the public to contribute. The Mayor and Mr Coles were appointed to operate on the bank account in respect to any funds contributed. The question of a Women’s Benevolent Committee was suggested by Mr Evans, to enquire into necessitous cases and apply ’relief], particularly in regard to clothing for young children. The Mayor promised to consult Mrs Perry with a view to organising action in regard to the matter.. It was stated there were necessitous cases in t-lio town, where relief of the nature mentioned would be welcomed. Some cases of drinking by two or three unemployed workers were mentioned, and it was resolved to obtain a police report with a view to drastic action. It was-decid-ed to suggest to. the County Chairman to open a relief fund for the country districts, and assist in providing extra money for work in deserving cases through the shortage of the weekly allocation from the Unemployment Fund. It was mentioned that next week there was a shortage of £34 in tlie Borough and £4O an the County in respect to 'full rationed time for the registered unemployed. Mr Evans said the County Overseer had suggested that the County staff contribute one day’s pay per month towards unemployment relief and this proposal was being put to tin staff for their consideration. Several men in the County with large families were on very short time at present due to the lack of funds.
