CANTERBURY V. WEST COAST

Idle Canterbury Boy’s Cricket Association representative teams played the. first twbvma.tches against the visiting West Coast boys yesterday. In each match twelve-a-side was played, the Greyinouth team meeting Canterbury under sixteen years, uhilst Hokitika were, opposed to Canterbury under fifteen. Both matches were won by-the Canterbury boys, but in the former there. was little between the, sides. CREYMOUTH MATCH.
The -Steymouth l match proved a great contest. , The \ Greymouth team batted first i and although they lost three of their best bats early, M’Diarmid came to light with 41, whilst Mathieson knockedup 28, the innings totalling 155; Canterbury also opened badly, Empson . and- Helson being dismissed- ; before ten:,had been reached.' Boulton did -better,; scoring 30, whilst the -Canterbury captain scored 42 At 88 a rot set 4n, and with 8 down for that total, the game looked going' toGreymouth. Opie, however, dug in, whilst Baldwin scored off anything loose 1 , -with the result that 67 runs -were added and the Greymouth total equalled -before the ninth wicket - fell.* Opie and Buchanan then went and with one wicket to fall, the scores were still level. Baldwin made the: winning hit and the innings totalled' 169.'' y ■ Greymouth batted again, when the score stood; at 22, M’Dairmid showed further 1 gopd form, notching 41 before he was caught* on the boundary Ashby batted for 26, whilst Mathieson hit;-out for 16, 'the innings totalling 136. 'With 123 required to win, 1 Canterbury had scored 68 with the loss of four wickets when time was called if HOKITIKA MATCH. Hokitika* "took, first knock but their inexperience .to playing on grass led to too iriiich forward play and. the side was ally out -for ’34, (Parker 12, G. Stapleton 10, Richards 7). Straclian took six wickets for 19 runs. Canterbury 'started badly, Harbidge, Strachan and Douglas going cheaply. ■Daniel and Le Lievre, however put Canterbury ahead and from then on runs came freely, McLachlnn, Clinton, and Bellamy helped things along Suntil . the total of 161 was reached.
Parker, five for 33, bowled well for Hokitika who, in their second session- again failed to show confidence, the first seven wickets falling for 22 runs. Then Johnson samp to light with a well-played 19, hut following his dismissal Khe innings closed for 44. Canterbury winning by an innings and 83 runs. .
