4VRRYBODYB PICTURES. “CLANCY IN WALL STREET.” WITH CHARLIE MURRAY. . According to Charles Murray, the comedian who plays in “Clancy in Wall Street,” hilarious all-talking farce-comedy which comes to the Princess Theatre to-night and Thursday there is nothing like going through the mill to give an actor poise and confidence that marks the true artist. Murray started his career as a circus clown, and then worked his way into vaudeville, where he remained a good many years before taking up legitimate acting. “I’ve never for one minute regretted that early training,” said Murray. .“There is something about the tough and ready methods of, the cruder forms of-entertainment that destroys every vestige of self-consciousness in an entertainer. One has to be alert in dealing with audiences direct. Vaudeville did a lot- for me in developing a firm foundation for legitimate acting. You’ve got to get your audience the minute you step on the stage. Another thing these old experiences have enabled me tO:do is to adapt myself to the talking pictures. Picture technique is in a class by itself. It is not only the fact that there isn’t an audience to play to;, its the necessity of repeating three or four times little bits of action, and keeping them all up to a certain standard, that befuddles even lots of oldtimers of the stage.’’
The part Murray plays in “Clancy in Wall Street” is that of an Irish plumber who gets into a series of uproarious escapades as a result of having invested his partner’s money—as well as his own—on the stock market. It’s the same type of character that Murray has played in “McFadden’s Plats” and other farces, but he’s a bit funnier in this one for the simple reason that he has bigger opportunities. Lucien Littlefield, co-starred with Murray; plays bis partner. Others in the* notable cast include Aggie Herring, 'Miriam Seegar, Edward Nugent and Reed Howes.
