The Bruening Government’s Christmas present to the people is likely to be an unpleasant surprise. The newspapers forecast an announcement to night, including a mine per cent, cut in the wages of a number of State officials and .employees, an increase of two per cent, in the business turnover tax, a ten .per cent, tax on interest from invested capital, reduction in the cost of living by a decrease in railway freight, transport charges, telephone and electric- light rates and a reduction in rents by ten per cent.
