The official recount of the votes cast at the general election in the Westland electorate will be commenced on Monday by the Returning Officer,. Mr R. Cox, and his staff. Considerable work will be entailed and will occupy about three days.

There was a good attendance at the Upper Kofterangi Hah last evening when a dance in aid of the school prize fund was held. The music was played by the Gaiety Dance* Band, extras being contributed by Miss A. Lynn, Messrs Williams and K. ’Auld.

The first meeting of the recently appointed West Coast Committee under the Re turned Soldiers Rehabilitation Scheme, will be held at Greymouth next Wednesday, when Mr W. E. Lea cl by, Rehabilitation officer for the district will be present and address the meeting. The Committee consists of several Greymouth gentlemen, and Mr D. J. Evans, who represents the Westland section of the district.

Mr S. Heyward of Matair.ui lias recently bad completed a new shop at Wniho Gorge. The plan of the new building is on modern lines similar in design to that recommended by the New Zealand Grocers Association. The budding is well lighted, having open back windows, the shelving is low and convenient, and the interior painted white with black facings. The shop will be of great service to the local residents and a convenience to campers in the holiday season. Adjoining, the shop is also a furnished flat, available for campers.

What might easily have proved a drowning. accident last evening, was averted by the prompt action of a young mail, Mr Cyril Schro'ider, when a little boy, the son.of Mr I). Thomas of Gibson Quay, fell into a deep hole in the old channel of the Hokitika river. Mr Schroeder without hesitation plunged in fuliy clad and caught the little chap as lie was being carried rapidly downstream by the current, which, when the tide is going out runs very rapidly at the point where the boy fell in. A number of other young men were swimming further down, but were too far away to have been in time to effect a rescue. The young man is to be highly commended for his prompt and plucky action.
