CARGOES BY ’PLAINES. DASH TO ESCAPE DUTIES. LONDON, November 26.' Over 15 tons of Continental goods were sent by special aeroplanes to Croydon in a last-minute rush to avoid the duties. Ships raced across the Channel with cargoes, but one shipload arrived too late to be cleared. Special precautions were taken on the coast after midnight to prevent dutiable goods being landed, and Customs officers in motor speed boats patrolled the Thames on the lookout for smugglers. During the last few days the. imports have been enormous, with a view of forestalling the duties. A second order, extending the range of new duties, is expected in a few days. “The Times” estimates the value of the articles covered by the fii'st order at £44,000,000 a year.
