DOGS XMAS MAIL KINGSFORD SMITH’S CRASH. (Australian Press Association) DARWlN,.December 2. 111-fortune still dogs the airmail. Kingsford Smith had a narrow escape from a serious accident when landing at the Darwin aerodrome at 1.40* o’clock to-day. , There were heavy clouds, thunder, lightning and steady rain. The visibility was bad. Flying low for the landing, the “Southern Star” struck a telegraph pole at the lower end of the drome. Jt tore the fabric.of one wing, broke tha rocker arm on one, cylinder of the starboard engine. It also dented the propeller. The other engines were not damaged, though part of the telegraph wire caught on the port engine

The ground engineer is hopeful that repairs will be effected to allow the resumption of the journey to-morrow. Kingsford Smith says that his tiip up was uneventful, ‘though it was very hot, and the latter part was through heavy rainstorms.
