In the course of his remarks last night from the platform in front of the “Guardian” Office, Mr O’Brien expressed pleasure and gratification at the news of the return of Mr F. W. Schramm for Auckland Mr I Schramm is a native of Hokitika, and I was a prominent pupil of the Hokitika State School. Mr O’Brien referred to him by 'bis school nickname “Rooster,” and doubtless be will be known by liis confrers in the House by that cognomen. Mr Schramm, who is now a solicitor in Auckland, is Secretary to the West Coasters’ Association, and he keeps a reeo’xl of all Coasters in and about Auckland. Miss Ella Robertson, pupil of Miss Thwaites of Greymouth, will appear in the dance recital in aid of the Swim* lniiig Club this evening, and will give her classic dance (Greece). Miss Robertson was first in the classic dance selection at the recent Christchurch Competitions and was warmly commended by the judge.

The Returning Officer for Westland, Mr R. Cox, had made very complete arrangements for the carrying out of the general election poll, and the whole procedure passed off very smoothly. After the dose of the poll the returns soon commenced to come in and before 9 o’clock, with the exception of one booth all the returns were to hand, the latter return being completed by 9.15 p.m. We have to thank Mr Cox for the manner in which the figures as they came to hand were made available.

■ After much labour and preparation, the fruits of thejr efforts will he made evident this evening when the Hokitika Swimming Club’s dance recital will 1 held in the Princess Theatre. The programme is being presented by Miss Thwaites of G-reymouth, and an excellent production is assured, the items being of a varying and attractive nature. The performers include seve?' well-known Hokitika residents, and patrons will display public spirit by supporting the Club which is endeavouring by their effort to reduce their debit balance.

The death of Mr Albert Truran which was recorded yesterday removes one of the very old band of miners, and !t figure that was well knowil all over the West Coast goldfields of the earlier tluyt, When prospecting was in progress at- Mt, Rangitoto many years ago Mr Truran took a prominent part therein. He was at Rimu all through the rush there, and ultimately settled in the township until the years forced his retirement from active work. He took a. keen interest in the progress cf the district for a long period of years. Of late he has suffered failing health and had been living in Hokitika. His popular figure will be missed by a wide circle of friencs who will regret his passing.

The aversion of - Mr E. D. Mosley, S.M., to the use of slang in the Court was well illustrated at Christchurch on Tuesday last. On several occasions he pleaded ignorance of the meaning of expressions! used by witnesses. “1 was cleaning up the joint and found the bottles,” said one defendant. “Joint?” echoed Mr Mosley. “Joint of beef, joint of meat or wliat?” “The place, you know,” amended defendant. The puzzled look left Air Mosley’s face and gave place to a smile. Again a little later the same defendant made another slip, but corrected himself just as Mr Mosley was about to intervene. “I was caught in a pub. under age,” he said. "I mean an hotel.” A woman witness found that the expression “nicking apples” conveyed nothing to the Bench. “Nicking?” . repeated Air Alosley several times. “Yes, stealing, you know,” came the explanation.
